Do you want to build a Rübedrum?
It is a synth drum circuit designed by Rübezahl Electronics, with the purpose to let people build their first electronic instrument by themselves. Originally designed for workshops, it is now available as a kit to let interested hobbyists do it from the comfort of their home. The kit includes all components that are necessary to build your own, but it’s also much more than a regular kit, where you just follow the instructions, having a streamlined product like all the other buyers of this kit. No! Each Rübedrum will be one of a kind and there are many design decisions you will make. It starts from choosing a suitable shell, where to place your controls, and also includes deciding what functions you want your finished musical instrument want to have. Do you want it to be able to play by itself or rather like a regular drum, played by your hands? Which functions do you want to be controlled by light, and which functions would you like to be controlled by a knob? Those are all questions that you will have to think about, so you can have the perfect personal instrument. I will guide you through this process as good as I can, and I hope it will be as rewarding as it will be challenging. The more creative and unusual the better. Happy building!
What is the Rübedrum?
The Rübedrum at its core is an analogue drum synth, that can be triggered by slapping on its shell, just like a real drum. When slapped it will produce a short percussive sound. The pitch, timbre as well as the length of this sound can be influenced in real time, either with light sensors or with traditional rotary knob. This circuit will be housed in a shell of your choice, which can be basically anything with enough space in it to house the circuit board and the other components.

What do I need to build a Rübedrum?
Besides an open mind and some time on your hand there are a couple of tools that are needed to finish this project. Some are essential, some are nice to have. As for skills, if this is your first time soldering and using a drill, or learning about electronic components it is doable but you might need some patience and read the instructions carefully. If you have a more experienced friend that can help you, even better. If you have some experience with anything similar it will definitely help, but it’s not required. I try to write the instructions in a way that also complete beginner can follow along, but please read everything carefully before going for it.
If you still have any question often some internet research can help or feel free to reach out and ask.
